A unique new partnership has been created by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Hampshire County Council to work together to build much-needed new homes at Manydown.

The two councils have created one joint organisation – Manydown Garden Communities LLP – to work together with a private sector developer to create 3,520 new homes on land to the west of Basingstoke owned by them on a 999-year lease.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council Leader Cllr Clive Sanders and Hampshire County Council Leader Cllr Roy Perry met to seal the creation of the new formal partnership on Thursday 21 March. The councils already have a shared vision to create Manydown as new neighbourhoods of connected communities developed in a well-planned and coordinated way – combining the best features from Hampshire villages and towns with a contemporary sustainable design.

Next, the new joint organisation is set to sign a contract with nationally-renowned master developer Urban&Civic, supported by global charitable foundation the Wellcome Trust, as the private sector development partner to join the councils to deliver their ambitious plans.

A decision on the outline planning application for the northern part of Manydown, submitted by the councils, is expected later in the spring. This sets out the main principles for up to 3,520 new homes, businesses, shops and community facilities, two new primary schools and land for a new secondary school, and a 250 acre country park.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council Leader Cllr Clive Sanders said: “Setting up this joint organisation is a formal statement of the shared long-term commitment by both councils to continuing to work in an effective partnership to make the aspirational vision for Manydown a reality. In the decades ahead, this will deliver on our pledge that Manydown will be developed in a way that creates a place where any of us would be proud to live.”

Leader of Hampshire County Council Cllr Roy Perry said: “As joint landowner, we’re dedicated to the success of this development which will reflect the great character of Hampshire as a place to live, work and thrive. Manydown has the potential to be a wonderful new community for Basingstoke, offering high quality, accessible homes for local people with access to good infrastructure and community facilities.”
